Known locally for a voice that belies her young age, Chelsea Valarie has spent the past few years honing her songwriting skills and has developed a depth and range to match her powerful vocal sound.
Born and raised on the Gold Coast, Australia, Chelsea draws on influences like Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and Stevie Wonder along with modern artists like Solange Knowles, H.E.R. and SZA to craft her own take on Neo Soul and R’n’B.
It was clear form a very early age that Chelsea had a gift for music. ‘I come from a fairly musical family, music was always an important part of our lives’, she says. At just twelve years old, Chelsea was invited to sing onstage with US soul singer – and million selling recording artist – Lisa Hunt, the two singers brought the house down with a version of Sisters are Doing it for Themselves. From that moment on, Chelsea became obsessed with singing, performing in every school band, choir and event that she could- at 17, she is in her last year of school. Chelsea has been performing in her local area, honing her skills at festivals like Buskers by the Creek and Tugun Lights Up.
Layers of lush, rich vocals, honest lyrics and deep grooves frame Chelsea’s first offering.
Throw Some Dice offers perspectives on change, personal growth and independence, Chelsea says; ‘…I wanted to write a song celebrating the strength required to overcome challenging situations by making personal changes…’. A forward-looking throwback to early 2000’s Neo Soul, Throw Some Dice is an undeniable statement of intent from this extremely promising new artist.
Throw Some Dice is now available on all things digital.
